Come for the air conditioning, leave because of the comedy.

When I started Rats eight years ago I thought I was running a weekly comedy night but now with the clarity of time it's clear it's a travelling circus. We are once again due to circumstances beyond our control packing up the elephants, stowing away the clown car and heading to the next London venue that has had the misfortune to book us.

We did however go out with a bang. This is what Rats is all about a rowdy audience of six guys from Cornwall, a handful of nurses who'd got in free and a Lithuania woman and her daughter watching comedy for the first time. Rats in it's purist form is four male incels dropping four consecutive sets of misogyny and self hate and blaming the night and audience for it not going well, it's safe to say we delivered.

There was a positive energy after we vanquished our latest stage manager (some people employ stage managers, we vanquish them), all too often some poor soul will join the team thinking they wanted to run away with the circus before quickly finding out they want to have a a monthly salary injected into their eyes and chained to a laptop like every other media automaton in the gig economy . As our Mexican stage manager donned his sombrero and rode his donkey into Camden we forced the next candidate to do ten press ups on stage to a baying crowd of entertained pigs

If you are experiencing personal issues like I am there is no better place to distract you than Rats. the ultimate palette cleanse for the hard of living. After last weeks address disaster we amended the location for the venue, but five minutes in I was beginning to wish that this particular audience hadn't got the update.

I think I'm pretty clear in Rats objectives, there is no false advertising with Rats, the marketing does not sugar coat it but despite that we are still getting audiences turning up determined to have a night of comedy which made for a painful experience for everyone.

We did manage to get one big laugh during the show but this was because what an act had omitted from their set. After speaking about being abandoned by his dad as a baby to five minutes of silence (copyright Rats comedy inc) I asked him post set if he'd like us to put a message out on our £8,000 interactive streaming software asking for his dad to check in if he was watching, I asked the young man for his estranged fathers name to which he replied Liviu - pronounced LEAVE YOU the biggest laugh of the night.

We finished the show kink shaming our front of house manager who apparently likes to chase girls round his bedroom pretending he's a lion.

After a short break where we had to jump ship from a venue that owed more money to acts than us (quite an achievement) we were filled with hope, like we are every time, that this new venue was going to be the place we finally called home.

Initial signs were good we've hired a producer for the first time since our previous one sued us for £5,000 and our new guy had set about selling 32 tickets for the first show a record for Rats. The crew was buzzing and for the first time in a long time we went into the night with a positive glow this time we were doing things right.

It got to doors opening and no one was there, normal, fifteen minutes later still no customers. I asked the producer where he thought the audience were and he shrugged his shoulders, by half past we had six people something was definitely up. I checked google and low and behold there was the address of the old venue, the 26 missing people were at the old venue. And although unbeknownst to them they had made the right choice to avoid the night it meant we were left in the new venue with the traditional six audience members. The only silver lining was we sold some tickets to an organisation called Tickets For Troops so hopefully one of them can assassinate my producer.

Less than 24 hours till the next show. Who's excited?

So whilst on the face of it Rats looks to be thriving, audience are turning up, we are making technical breakthroughs not seen in live comedy before and degenerates from across the globe are hearing the sirens call and throwing themselves onto the jagged rocks of the night but I fear I've created a monster, my own version of the Manson family but one that unlike Charles I have no control over.

The scene was set when our ex stage manager Mike turned up dressed as a minion and started ranting about how we'd betrayed him throughout the show and that Russell owns BT and is a secret agent trying to destroy him until he abruptly had to leave to catch a train back to Eastbourne where he is currently living with his grandma.

As always there was an air of tension in the air as we attempt to rig our home brew TV studio with over 100 HDMI leads and XLR Cables in less than 90 minutes at a cost of £5000 and rising in equipment costs. I never know if it is going to work until 1 minute before show time, throw in the fact that I bring my 7 month old puppy to show and the word stressed out doesn't even cover my state of mind when I take to the stage.

A man in the audience was adamant that I was wearing a wig and constantly shouted out the word wig at me, I decided to bring him down a peg or two only to find out that his job was helping young people with autism get jobs I was check mated and there was nothing I could do but stand there and take the insults. the second half we had a live piano recital via video link and a guest on the podcast genuinely looked and behaved like a murderer. I came off stage to be shown a slanderous illegal video by our ex contributor @caesarknight

Over the eight years that we've done Rats many things have changed, the venues, the staff, the entrance fee, the format but the one thing throughout this period has remained constant is the quality of acts performing and Tuesday was no different. As the show becomes more commercially successful even a hardened purist like me can be swayed to compromise on his principles. Originally the idea was to over book the night on purpose to subject the audience to the show equivalent of death by a thousand cuts so just when you thought you'd seen the worst comedian of all time another seven even worse acts would hit you and then there would be an interval before the same thing happened again.

Times and attention spans have changed and quality of acts has considerably worsened, which means in 2025 you can achieve the effect with four comedians that you could have done with fifteen. This was achieved easily on Tuesday to the point that a woman in the audience fell asleep, she had such a serene look on her face that we then tried to encourage the rest of the audience to do the same but instead of doing that we only succeeded in waking up the woman who had been asleep.

The second half is now a live podcast where we discuss with the acts and aucdience what we've just seen. To give you an idea of how bad the quality of the acts was this week an audience member who got up and talked about polymers for ten minutes got the biggest laugh of the night.

I'm so focussed on setting up what is essentially a home made TV studio glued together with HDMI leads, XLR cables and the good will of few media pioneers manning it that I feel like a ghost haunting the show rather then being there in flesh and blood. The next day fragments come to me as the fog in my mind clears and the adrenaline dissipates. Things like a guy getting up from the audience and me having to improvise a scene with him about avocado toast. Or our audience correspondent repeatedly grunting in the corner every time he was spoken to and then getting up and shouting when challenged halting the show and scaring the twenty paying customers (he texted me today saying I will feel his wrath). I vaguely remember an audience members friend video calling the show from the pub, but i have no idea why. At one point I think someone in the audience started to hum the Severance theme song and then a discussion about how many members of the Sugar Babes there were ensued. I asked a man to close a door and he didn't know how. Somewhere around all this there was some performers doing their act which seemed to go ok. I noticed there was knife on a table for no apparent reason.

The show finished, everyone left and I just sat on the floor surrounded by wires, my dog who'd endured the whole show stared at me before pissing on the floor. This is whats known in the trade as a classic rats.

Never a good start to the year when you've got to late Feb and you are already £65,000 in the hole from losing not one but two legal cases. I was looking for some respite, what better shelter is there from the storm than Rats where no matter how bleak and depressing your life is it pales in comparison to that of those performing and watching

Essentially my goal of this series is to make 60k which a lot of you might think unlikely but I have always had faith despite a turnover so low that an accountants cleaner could file the Rats accounts.

For this series we have essentially built a mobile TV studio and are attempting to run two shows concurrently the one on the stream and the one in the room ,It is essentially the most expensive plate spinning act ever assembled by man.

Tonights only audience were two ex army boys, I did not ask them where they had seen action but I could tell from their faces that whatever horrors they had faced on the battle field had not prepared them for what was a classic rats.

The Rats travelling circus is packed up and ready for its next adventure. Another amazing series of London's most chaotic comedy club. So many big things planned for 2025. Thanks to all three members of audience who attended the run, the many members of staff who resigned and of course the several venues that hosted us. And most importantly thanks to the haters, remember we are a great gig and you are a terrible comedian.

It was Halloween and the ghouls and evil spirits had been summoned to the venue when Emily our stage manager invited her whole stand up class down. She told me they were coming to watch but she had told them they were coming to perform. As the night was already fully booked I had to tell them that they would not be performing. They took this badly. For those of you who know the night there is already quite a toxic hostile atmosphere. This made it much worse. Angry that they would not get the stage time these ghouls craved they took to the youtube stream to leave bitter comments about me.

Costume wise I went for an Eyes Wide Shut theme. We blindfolded our keyboard player and I came out in full costume. When I asked what the password was several times I began to realise this was not a crowd who knew the movie. So immediately were not on side, which essentially just made me a strange man in a mask to them. Just another layer of awkwardness and tension added to an already tense and awkward evening. The band immediately turned against me with the drummer playing bada ba bas evrytime I spoke, to much laughter. I panicked and in a desperate attempt to get them on side I said I was the much more widely known Phantom Of The Opera which got the audience slightly more on side, the plotline spookily turned out to be the exact plot line of me and our stage managers relationship.

At the end of the night I felt it only fair to give the bitter open mic comedians a shot at stage time. So invited them on to close the night what I hadn't told them was they had to share their five minutes between them. They were very angry and there was even more tension in the air now. I hadn't noticed but one of the performers a man from Lebanon had somehow been cable tied to a chair, in the current geo political landscape this just added yet even more tension to a night that was supposed to be a comedy night but had now turned into some weird hostage situation where it looked like a Jewish promoter had tied an Arab to a chair and refused to let them perform. The true horror of Halloween in all it's gory detail.

Tuesdays show consisted of three audience members all of whom were suffering from involuntary muteness. Every question was rebutted with stoney silence and grim looks, I turned to the live stream in the hope one of the four people watching might interact with me give me something to build the night around get things started and yet at every turn all I received was silence. Trapped in a vacuum of my own making, at Rats no one can hear you scream because it's usualy internally and well there is no one there, how can you end a show if your audience won't even let you start it.

The phrase "car crash" is thrown around but I like to think Rats is the closest thing to when drivers slow down on the motorway to see mangled bodies of car crash victims stuck in their twisted steel coffins. Like the sirens call our audience is drawn to the show through the eerie silence emanating from whatever dark basement we've been allowed to host this weeks horror show and the first halfs silence was one of the loudest we've had. As the various voyeurs took their seats throughout the evening some transfixed for the whole night, others unable to suffer the pain of the night longer than one act we built some sort of momentum which culminated in instructing the whole audience, which was now about twenty people to hide from the only audience member who had bought a ticket when she went to the toilet. As I stood on stage whilst our only paying audience member was in the toilet and the others were hiding in the stairwell it dawned on me that I was born to play to empty chairs in empty rooms anyone can build an audience up but not building an audience up and still carrying on that takes real talent.

In order to elicit the illusive walk up audience I have invested in a chalk board to put outside the venue. Instead of bringing walk up it has brought rain, torrential rain on both weeks thus rendering the £50 spent on it completely useless. One because people don't walk around when it's raining and two chalk is not waterproof, in fact it is the opposite of waterproof, there is not a less waterproof substance known to man than chalk. So instead a black board with iledgible writing sat outside advertising nothing to no one. We can't be accused of false advertising.

My mood was not helped when two members of staff both equally awful at regulating their emotions and communicating in a manner befitting of human being and not sentient excrement did not show up for work meaning our team of five was reduced to three. This meant I had to host the show, produce a live stream, operate a camera and manage the door in a sort of post modern vaudeville interpretation of the plate spinning act where audience had to work out what was an act and what was a man doing four jobs at once badly. As i pondered why the worlds most dysfunctional humans keep attaching themselves to the night like barnacles cleaning a whales arsehole I realised I had zoned out for most of the show and we were in the second half .

The loudest round of applause of the evening was when we instigated a giant game of guess who where Rusell picked an audience member and I had to guess who it was. The quietest moment was when an act styling themselves as "Jay The Gay" got on stage and did what I would describe as autism.

A famous comedian was supposed to join us on the post show podcast but as the show was so depressing we wrapped it up early to put us all out of our misery and instead hosted two guests who were police officers, one of who was the aforementioned Jay The Gay whom admitted he'd been to the sex dungeon we used to host the night at and was urinated on there regularly. It's Rats the premiere podcast to give a voice to pond scum open mic comedians. Wow that was the worst first half ever, almost played to complete silence. Three acts walked out crying in the second half. This is the aftermath.

I, more than anyone have defended Rats as a "good night" but i cannot in good faith defend last nights latest offering of "entertainment." It was in the top three bleakest nights at Rats and those of you who
have followed the night over the years know that I do not say that lightly. We've lost our only paid member of staff, stage manager Mike, who supposedly found it unreasonable to charge females to use the toilet in order to help cover his salary. He was last seen busking in
Leicester square in a rat mask singing a song about kidnapping children, we are deeply concerned for his welfare.

The audience consisted of three civil servants who were subjected to some of the worst comedy to ever to grace the stages of Englands decaying shores. Mysogonistic act after mysogonistic act strode to the stage to belittle obese women on Hinge and wave their dicks around to the shock of our tiny audience which was even smaller than the penises of the acts performing.The audience did increase slightly in the second half as two German engineering students where press ganged into
staying after mistakenly wondering downstairs to find a toilet. As I had used up all my audience interaction in order to get some momentum from somewhere we were left with no choice but to google Civil Servants pensions as Russell head of vibes had heard they were generous. I had not envisaged at this stage of my career that the
highlight of a show I was hosting would be two German student engineers looking perplexed as we scrolled through the eye watering figures of pensions for civil servants. I've spent 2.5 k on this night and put an unquantifiable amount of emotional investment into it to
create what essentially is a night that has more cameras then people there on a weekly basis. I will make this a good night of entertainment even if it kills me.

Quite a few of the comedy rats thought they were a bit tasty on the stand-up stage until they came up against Louis.

The audience sat stoney faced without even the faintest murmer of laughter until Louis Saved the day.

Praise is due to @louisgeorgecomedysolutions : he is King Rat of week 2.

Rats has for some reason only known to the people who run it returned. And what a start to the second season in our new home. Recovering from a hefty cold as my body finally surrendered to months of stress I dragged my ill self to Soho to host the show. I struggled to work out
what was more painful the virus invading my body or the acts material invading my soul. After arriving at 6am to set up finally Mike our stage manager had the show ready to go at 7pm with an ambitious thirty chairs, four would have been fine as that's how many people turned up.
Unless we are counting the women who used the toilet as throughout the night, what felt like hundreds of them slammed the downstairs door walking through the show to use it. There is a vicious rumour swirling around this morning that I told Mike to force them to pay to use the
toilet this couldn't be further from the truth I simply told him to suggest it. THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUGGESTING AND FORCING.

We were honoured to have @joshglanc Edinburgh award nominated comedian join us as always the night doesn't quite know what to do when someone actually talented performs but normal service was resumed from there
on in as the night dribbled to it's usual sad conclusion. In a change to our scheduled programme Ed our marketing manager who has overseen a steady decline in ticket sales (which I'm not even sure how that's possible) since taking the role got up on stage and closed with an opera song. If only he showed the same talent for marketing as he has for singing we might actually finally sell some tickets for this show and ruin more peoples lives than just mine.

So that concludes another horiffic series of Rats.

We decided to go for an Olympics theme for the sold out final and as far as I could see only me and front of house manger Mike had read the memo. The idea of the final is to elevate the night from a terrible night to an average one, always a difficult line to straddle after you've slagged off all the comedians and denigrated the art form in the 12 week run up. As the show started it became clear that this was the standard of a heat with acts choosing to talk about f+cking their rank, autistic sister, using an impromptu encore to try out an untested rape joke that played to complete silence and a full five minutes about a former bully of theirs hanging themselves to one of the longest silences we've ever had at Rats (worthy of the prize IMO but he did not stick around till the end of the show to be eligible)

An audience member who sat in the front row looked like Johnny Depp it turned out that not only did he look like him he was his number one fan launching into a lengthy tirade about all the legal injustices our Johnny D had suffered which sparked a one man campaign for #JusticeForJohnny much to chagrin of the room. Mike the stage manger dressed as a body building Rat hosted an archery competition between the johnny Depp Look alike and "Team Ambers" Alfie to try and ease the tension.

The night was too close to call so the remaining three finalists were called to a fencing competition using 16inch dildos, Joe Haddad found some self worth and decided this was a step too far for his dignity, Alex Chase threw himself on his own dildo in an act of self sacrifice rarely seen on the open mic circuit leaving Nicky G a worthy winner of the Rats Summer season 2024.

We offered him the dildos as a prize but he refused which meant technically all profits had all gone on purchasing dildos which means me and Russel got paid for this series of Rats in dildos a fitting payment for a series of this quality I'm sure you'll agree.
